Congress Approves Legislation to Make Public Jeffrey Epstein Files

The Senate on this Tuesday gave swift approval to legislation that will force the release of investigative files concerning the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following a near-unanimous vote in the House of Representatives and a change of position by Donald Trump and his GOP allies. The administration gave in after an extended period of trying to delay the cross-party initiative involving a case that has plagued the president since his comeback to the White House.

Expedited Passage in Congress

Senators proceeded by general agreement, which requires approval from each senator but does not require a individual voting process, expediting the process. Hours earlier, the House passed by a huge margin the bill on a massive majority.

The public have been patient long enough. Jeffrey Epstein’s victims have waited patiently,” the top Senate Democrat said in a address to the chamber on Tuesday, before requesting the Senate to adopt it by consent. “Let the truth come out. Ensure full disclosure.”

Next Steps

The bill next goes to Donald Trump for his endorsement. Trump stated on Monday that he would approve the bill.

Though Trump has for an extended period downplayed the uproar over the official management of the Epstein case as a “false narrative”, he signalled his support for the House bill over the weekend, and announced he would approve it if it reaches his desk.

Reaction

The Democratic party, along with those affected and their representatives who were seated in a public section, cheered after the bill was passed. The only opposition came from a GOP representative, who said he worried the measure would reveal personal information of people, those under scrutiny and others implicated in the investigation.
