An extensive industrial complex situated on the outskirts of the capital is addressing nuclear contamination after a government team found traces of the dangerous isotope Caesium-137 at 22 manufacturing plants within the area, that includes businesses that export chilled marine products.

Emergency Measures and Goods Withdrawal

The finding has triggered emergency decontamination operations and the relocation of local residents, following a similar contamination scare in the United States that was traced back to the Indonesian plants.

Probe and Detection of Contamination

The country's authorities initiated an inquiry when the American FDA detected Caesium-137, a nuclear isotope, in a shipment of frozen breaded shrimp exported by an Indonesian company.

The FDA issued an warning instructing distributors and sellers to dispose of the goods and avoid selling it, even though the detected level was well under the authority's action threshold. They noted that the amount of Caesium-137 they had detected would not pose an immediate hazard to consumers.

The authority explained: “The primary impact on health of concern following longer term, repeated low dose exposure (eg through consumption of contaminated food or water over a period) is an increased chance of cancer, caused by harm to DNA within living cells.”

Widespread Contamination and Health Checks

Radiation tests showed at least 22 plants in the manufacturing zone were affected. The Indonesian taskforce did not identify the 21 additional production sites, but confirmed they would promptly receive decontamination processes carried out by the country's nuclear authority.

The environment minister stated that people residing in strongly polluted areas would be relocated until the location was cleaned, emphasizing that the safety of the residents was the “main concern”.

Medical officials also performed checks on nearby workers and residents living near the manufacturing zone, identifying nine people who showed signs for exposure to Caesium-137. They were referred to a hospital before being allowed to return home.

Cleanup and Containment Measures

The contaminated sites will right away undergo decontamination operations by Indonesia's nuclear institute. Officials have also designated the site of a recycled metal factory as an isolation center for polluted goods.

The country, which has no atomic power plants or arms program, believes that Caesium-137 may have entered the country from overseas.
