The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
