Eurovision Used to Be a Campy Joy – Yet It Has Evolved Into a Strategic Method to Whitewash War.
A freshly coined acronym emerged a few months following the onset of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Referred to as WCNSF, it signifies “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This term is found only in Gaza, according to doctors such as paediatricians. Normally, it is rare for medical staff to attend to a child who has lost their complete family. But, there has been no semblance of normality regarding the widespread destruction in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been obliterated and the number of child amputees surpasses that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing ordinary in numerous doctors returning from a sea of ruins with accounts of children being deliberately targeted.
An Unimaginable Crisis Regardless of a Reported Truce
The Gaza Strip continues to be a profound humanitarian disaster. Essential medical supplies are not getting in those in need, and groups like Amnesty International assert that atrocities are ongoing. The Israeli government has denied these accusations, consistent with how it refutes each claim it is accused of. But while grieving children who lost parents are now freezing in makeshift tent camps, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from pursuing its declared purpose of “unity and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to extend a blood-red carpet for Israel, although at least four European countries have now boycotted in dissent. A Double Standard
Disregard the reality that Israel was criticized for questionable voting tactics last year in what seems to have been an bid to manipulate Eurovision. Ignore the report that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Pay no mind to the evidence that aggression from Israeli settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Disregard the condition that foreign reporters are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. This entire context, apparently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.
The Show Goes On While Ignoring Profound Human Cost
Eurovision marks seven decades next year – nearly twice the projected longevity of a person in Gaza now. The event will proceed, but it will never be able to restore the camp joy it was formerly known for. A competition that once promoted togetherness has transformed into a transparent instrument to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
