French authorities to begin stopping small boats in English Channel following British demands
French officials have consented to start stopping small boats in the Channel, following an extended period of pressure from the United Kingdom.
The change in policy follows the British leader wrote to the President asking him to support the plan and stating there currently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the Channel.
French security forces will be allowed to stop the small boats at sea, but only before they've picked up their migrants, according to official statements.
French authorities have infrequently acted to prevent the heavily loaded boats leaving the shoreline because it is viewed as too great a risk to both officers and individuals.
"It is crucial that we implement these tactics this period... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel."
Now, a French naval police spokesperson states personnel will start taking action at sea, with the objective of safeguarding human life.
Notably, the spokesperson excluded the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had earlier been reported as a possible technique to disable the propellers of the vessels.
This determination to intervene at all is a significant advancement, following a brief shift towards a stricter strategy this summer, which ceased when the former Interior Minister departed from government.
This was demonstrated in July, in the run-up to a meeting between the Prime Minister and French president, when authorities were witnessed walking into the sea to damage the hulls of a vessel.
Now French authorities will once more be allowed to intercept boats prior to they pick up asylum-seeking passengers from the beaches of France's north coast, although it's uncertain how the vessels will be prevented.
Strong winds are presently delaying the start of interceptions and the people-smuggling networks will be looking for ways to adapt to evade interception, as they have frequently done in the past.
The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for comment.
