From Praise to Fury: Right-wing Reaction to Jeffrey Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.

Conservative reactions to the partial disclosure of documents related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent presence of former President Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how heavy redactions cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative light.

Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Strong Hyperbole

Justice Department representatives defended the redactions with intense exaggerated language. “Never in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this open with the American people about such a sensitive legal issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo outlining the censorship process.

Questions Prompted by Redactions

While the former president's identity and image are visible in some of the materials, the widespread black blocks prompt serious questions about the information may be hidden beneath them. A number of Republicans swiftly demanded increased transparency.

“The public are furious and disengaging,” posted Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

In a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the statute, and implied that a subsequent legislature may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s file dump grossly does not adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he continued.

Some Conservative Figures Swing In Support of the Release

However, some rightwing pundits and Trump loyalists came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.

The release—originating from a DOJ led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are completely redacted, and many of the men shown in pictures have their faces obscured.

Yet a few are not, including high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, allowed certain conservative voices to go on the attack.

“This is pretty ironic how the political left wrongly claimed President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.

“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”

Former President Spokesperson Issues Statement

Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of no criminal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House has not been hiding those documents for months only to release them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.

“This is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from information they’ll try and hide permanently. So they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the response concluded.

Broader Rightwing Comment Seems Muted

However, broader comment on the political right was relatively subdued following the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for transparency that came before the congressional approval to pass a bill requiring the files' release.

Loomer, who recently accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal proponents for a complete release. In February, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing personalities were provided physical binders of materials that contained no new data.
