‘It Completely Altered My Existence!’ How Young Eco-Restoration Enthusiasts Transformed a Agricultural Property – and Began a Campaign

The beautifully intricate call of the songbird is a rare presence in Britain today, however it's different at the Surrey site. Back in 2020, a single bird could be noticed at this remote location in the countryside of Surrey; this summer, they were all around. “We were hearing them chirping all night, from five different territories,” says Meg Cookson, lead ecologist for the Youngwilders. A team of Youngwilders were residing temporarily at the property, however the birds were so boisterous, “we were unable to rest all night,” says Layla Mapemba. “We were all exhausted the next day, but it was so cool.” An expert from the regional nature organization came to help them trap and mark one of the songbirds the next morning, Cookson remembers: “He’d never held a songbird in his possession before. He was crying.”

Ecological Restoration Accelerates at the Surrey Site

Rewilding is by nature a slow business, but here at this property, after just several seasons, the results are already apparent, and noticeable. The farm used to be a retirement home for horses. Now it’s a model for the youth-led purpose: to hasten ecological restoration, in one of the ecologically impoverished countries in the globe, and to link youth (18-30-year-olds) with a natural world they are often excluded from, and a climate crisis they are often unable to stop. Rising temperatures continues, deforestation damages natural habitats, and another Cop summit ends with a unsatisfactory conclusion in Brazil – so who could blame youth for choosing to act independently?

Our initiative was premised on the idea that there were people willing to allow a bunch of youthful idiots on to their land

“The youth is the most knowledgeable in terms of nature that there’s previously,” states the Youngwilders’ leader, one organizer. They are also “the highly invested in the issues, and have played the minimal role to their origin, and, then, are also going to suffer the worst as a result.”

Revitalization of the Landscape

Today, the organisation is growing across the UK – and this location started it all, in multiple ways. “It’s the initial project, and where we created our network,” says Molly Easton, as she provides a overview of the 12-hectare land. “This once consisted of divided plots,” she states, as we move through long grass dotted with shrubs, bordered by mature woodland. “The main visible change is that we’ve eliminated all the fencing, a significant length of it, to give the sense like one landscape.” In the warmer months, they donned protective gear and eradicated large amounts of harmful weeds, an aggressive flora that can burn the flesh. “We’ve introduced numerous of natural barriers,” notes the director. “But the primary focus is we’ve just let it breathe for a brief period. We’ve reduced a large part of animal feeding and seen what’s come up.”

Low scrub and hedgerows are a excellent nightingale environment, she says, although currently they’re cutting back some of the wild growth to create a greater range of environments and to link up two parts of the property. New trees will take considerably longer to take root, but young trees from the adjacent oaks are already growing in the meadows; the team have been installing barriers to safeguard them from animals.

Wildlife Comes Back in Droves

In addition to the songbirds – fauna is returning in large numbers. This year they’ve seen grass snakes, creatures, nocturnal mammals and invertebrates, says another co-director, as he raises one of their survey equipment (like a doormat over a small hollow in the soil). “You discover snakes and things hiding under there, but it’s likely a bit chilly for them now.” Wild homes, built using hollowed-out parts of timber and buzzing with insects, are fixed to some of the trees. The removal of animals has given small creatures room to flourish in the overgrown areas. When they visited this time, comments the director, “I’d not once encountered so many lepidoptera. There were just clouds of them. We were wondering, ‘What is going on?’”

Beginnings of the Movement

The initial participants – Noah, Jack, Molly and more individuals – came together as youth, studying or expressing an concern in nature. In 2019, the IPCC was forecasting that the target of one and a half degrees of global heating was appearing unachievable, Greta Thunberg was leading the school strikes for climate movement, and advocate Clover Hogan was talking about young people suffering from “eco-worry”. It was also the era of a writer's work, on rewilding, on how the authors revitalized the a nearby property from a unsuccessful dairy farm into a successful natural habitat. “We were deeply influenced by the Knepp story, but what was the function for youth?” says Molly. “So we developed a platform and called numerous of conservation groups and were saying, ‘Do you occasionally get your property owners wanting to make changes and you don’t have time?’”

Jack adds the narrative: “Our entire organisation was basically premised on the belief that there were landowners who were willing to let a collection of youthful amateurs on to their estate indiscriminately, to make fairly massive choices that would change land value
