Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during a recent discussion.
“That gives me comfort, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”
It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.
“Still unsure,” the coach said. “However, I can share, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. And again, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”
New York police released surveillance images earlier this week of a suspect in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt according to reports.
The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday in the area between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a newborn.
“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd was inactive during the current season, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.
Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on early August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn said. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. He is completely involved. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in last year and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with New York in March.
