Prison Shock: Brazil's FormerPresident Bolsonaro Confronts Time in Prison
He fought justice and justice prevailed.
Sixty days after receiving a 27-year sentence for attempting to “eradicate” Brazil’s democratic institutions, former president Jair Bolsonaro at last seems jail-bound.
Imminent Jailing
The found-guilty instigator – who had been living under house arrest in his estate while a series of court processes and petitions proceed – is widely expected to be incarcerated in the coming days, amidst growing rumors that he will be transferred to a well-known top-security prison.
Past Comments on Convicts
During Bolsonaro’s long political career, the far-right ex- military man showed little mercy for the country's inmates.
“For what reason must we provide these scoundrels a comfortable existence?” he once mused. “They deserve to be messed, period. That's my opinion.”
In another instance, Bolsonaro declared: “If you don’t want to wind up there, all you have to do is to avoid sexual assault, kidnap or theft.”
Incarceration Destination Speculation
However the idea of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda high-security prison in Brasília has appalled supporters, four of whom this week toured the prison in an apparent bid to discourage the high court from transferring him there.
Senator Lucas, a politician from Bolsonaro’s political party who was one of the visitors, stated he anticipated the septuagenarian leader to be jailed in the following week and a half and worried his destination could be Papuda.
He asserted Bolsonaro’s acute gut issues – the outcome of a life-threatening assault during the last presidential campaign – meant it would be dangerous to keep the ex-leader there. “His [health] situation is very grave. He cannot to handle it if they send him to Papuda … It could be awful,” he commented, who also voiced anxiety about cramped cells and the quality of inmate food.
During his tour Papuda, Lucas remembered seeing cells accommodating forty detainees: “That’s virtually one square metre per inmate.
“We talked to the convicts and they complain, of course, of the horrible food,” remarked the senator.
Allies Speak Out
Lucas is not the only voice voicing opinions prior to the one-time head of state's anticipated incarceration.
Penning in a major newspaper, a different supporter, the former communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “brutal” finale to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” time in office and claimed Brazil was about to witness “the greatest unfairness in its record”.
“It is an injustice that erodes the hearts of many people in Brazil,” Wajngarten wrote.
Divided Public Opinion
This could be accurate due to the considerable support Bolsonaro retains on the right-wing. However his predicted imprisonment has also gladdened the spirits of millions individuals who think he should be incarcerated for conspiring to stop the incoming president from taking power – and even scheming to have him murdered.
Congressman Otoni, a congressman for the incumbent leader's Workers’ party, said: “No one wants Bolsonaro to be sent in a dungeon. Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in solitary confinement. Not a soul wants Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We want him to obtain respectful treatment – but respectful care while incarcerated. He must not continue being his own prison warden for his whole life.”
Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro allies, who have for a long time applauding the severe conditions of inmates, had suddenly become aware to their privileges. “Only now has the conservative fringe – which has always argued that basic rights were not for lawbreakers – opted to tour a prison to discover what conditions are really like,” he said.
“The former president is a lawbreaker,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he earned “degrading, demeaning conduct”.
Likely Jail Environment
In spite of speculation that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which now houses about thousands of detainees, his probable assigned facility seems to be a nearby prison for law enforcement and other “special” inmates called Papudinha (Small Papuda).
The accommodations are far more pleasant than those in the primary facility, although nonetheless a world away from the opulence Bolsonaro enjoyed while living in the stunning official residence, approximately a short distance away.
According to information, the cell Bolsonaro could expect to reside in in Papudinha has about 24 sq metres – roughly the dimensions of a couple of car spots – and features a 130 square foot bathroom with a shower and a 12 square meter veranda. “He could be allowed to have a TV and also a small fridge in his quarters as long as they were supplied by his relatives,” sources stated.
Ideological Responses
The lawmaker condemned the talked-about idea to send the former leader to Papuda as “an act of retaliation” on the part of the supreme court judge who led Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will determine his future in the {
