For much of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield find themselves trapped within a psychic prison constructed from the memories of Vecna. Their mission for an escape route in episode 6 has them experience a life-altering moment from Henry's early years—a discovery that may just hold the means to overcome him once and for all.

The Discovery in the Tunnel

Upon meeting Max in the mental landscape called Camazotz, it becomes clear she is hiding out in a grotto that Henry is terrified of. A clever observation a viewing device taken from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies not within the cave. Matching her view with the shape, she and Max plummet into a abandoned tunnel.

They watch a young, eight-year-old Henry find an man who is hurt and scared. Attempting assistance, the man reacts violently, wounding the boy in the hand. To protect himself, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly questions through tears. Essentially, yes, but the trauma wasn't just a fight for life.

A Naval Mystery and A Spy's Mission

This backstory explains the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension later called the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who came back in a unresponsive state with an different blood composition.

That survivor's offspring, Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker took experimental components to hand over to the Russian agents, who were eager to begin their own interdimensional projects. That traitor in the cavern is the one who stole the materials.

Unlocking the Mystery

Considering what is revealed about the doctor's experiments, the case almost certainly contained vials of the unique blood type. At that moment, Henry is already bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon opening the case, which triggered the awakening of his powers—traits he would later pass on to the kids Brenner would experiment on.

Another possibility, the box could have held dark matter that was destined to travel to the Hawkins lab, where it maintains the stability of the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, returning after half a day fundamentally changed. Throughout the play, he struggles with the control of a sinister presence, reminiscent of how Will was controlled by the shadow monster in an earlier season.

Confronting Terror

Henry's enduring terror linked to that memory shows how profoundly traumatic the encounter was for him. While he orchestrates the collective consciousness and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him lingers. Fear is his tool, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between him and Will, who has overcome his personal demons to fortify himself.

His confrontation has taken a weapon from Vecna. Crucially, Will now understands what Vecna himself fears, which could provide a critical advantage in the ultimate battle ahead.
