The East African nation Takes Back Valuable Artefacts After a 100-Year Residence in a German Family
Exactly 12 ancient items have been ceremoniously given back to the Ethiopian nation after remaining by a German family for in excess of 100 years.
The artefacts, originally gathered in the 1920s by the German diplomat to Ethiopia a German envoy and his wife his partner, were handed over on Wednesday to the research center at the university in Addis Ababa.
This collection included headpieces, shields and paintings, all considered as historically important in the country.
"These treasures continue to represent a emblem of the lasting and friendly connection between Germany and Ethiopia," said the German diplomat, Germany's ambassador to Ethiopia.
Professor a professor, whose parent was born during the household's service in the nation, handed over the objects at a event joined by Tourism Minister the tourism official.
He said that the family's goal to restore the artefacts was to "showcase their splendor with the people and preserve the heritage and past tied to my father's birth."
These artefacts were either presents or purchases, according to the relatives.
"I would like to thank Professor Weiss's relatives for actively expressing their deep appreciation for Ethiopia by diligently preserving these items and importantly ensuring their homecoming to their rightful nation," said the minister of tourism.
She noted that the pieces would soon be available to the general audience for investigation and scholarly work, calling the decision a milestone in safeguarding the nation's historical legacy.
"Efforts will continue to return historical artifacts that are found in the custody of collectors and organizations around the world," she stated.
In the era of colonial rule in the African continent, thousands of cultural artefacts were taken.
This request by African countries for the restoration of stolen items has been responded to by some positive outcomes in lately - although some items are just on temporary return.
In the year 2022, the German government was the initial state to return some of the famous Benin artifacts to the Nigerian people as part of an effort to address its "complex past."
