We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your partner and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. At first glance, it could look like conventional biological terror, but within Together lies a deep examination about our choices in loving each other.
An Introductory Film Investigating Partnership Complexities
Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a unique chemistry to their characters, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.
The plot begins when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions conclude. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
A Paranormal Spark
While hiking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two discover an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.
The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, blending moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes during something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.
Layered Performances
A great deal of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.
In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He fears the idea of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for mobility.
The film's most intelligent aspect is that he never makes Tim or Millie the obvious villain.
Tim and Millie face the sort of issues that arise in most partnerships a decade in. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their future together.
Allegory and Meaning
While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.
A Debated Finale
Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a strong argument for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on today.
Together is available to watch on Hulu now.
