The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Song
This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It features the beloved group of outcasts, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and making their mark, while teasing at multiple agonizing backstories for key figures such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
All in all, the intro appears stunning. However, I felt that something was lost in the song choice.
The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional composition created by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track originating from the official score of that title, the second one put out by the production company's record label their music brand. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will love its inclusion.
Personally, The series' intro fails to capture the hype and energy that accompanied the second campaign's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician the artist, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Featuring vocals from one actress, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of adventurous fun.
The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's a grand composition, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.
Of course, the creators has already said that the series will have some surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or want a head start to get to know the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
