He has been under growing pressure over his associations with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, with demands for the monarchy to take steps against him.
That now appears to have led to the prince deciding to willingly give up his honors and to relinquish involvement of the prestigious order.
In his message he said he continued to "strongly deny the accusations against me".
"In discussion with the sovereign, and my immediate and wider family, we have decided the ongoing allegations about me divert from the responsibilities of His Majesty and the royal household," said a message from him.
"I have decided, as I always have, to put my obligation to my kin and nation first.
"I support my decision five years ago to stand back from official duties.
"With His Majesty's approval, we think I must now go a further step. I will therefore no longer hold my honor or the awards which have been granted to me. As I have said before, I firmly refute the claims against me."
The royal has faced a range of controversies, such as a court case he settled with the plaintiff, doubts about his economic affairs and his association with an accused foreign agent.
He will continue to be a member of royalty - but will discontinue to be the the Duke, a designation bestowed from his the late Queen, the former monarch.
Andrew had already ceased to be a "working royal" and had lost the use of his HRH title and no longer appeared at official royal events. His role now will be even more diminished.
His previous partner will be known as Sarah and no longer York's Duchess, but their children will continue to have the designation of royal princess.
Prince Andrew has encountered severe examination over his associations with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, more lately involving doubts about when he had truly severed communication.
In his television appearance, the royal had said that he had severed all links with the financier after they had been pictured together in NYC in the end of 2010.
But emails sent in early 2011 later surfaced indicating that Andrew had in private stayed in touch with the financier, including exchanging a communication: "Stay in contact and we'll meet again soon!"
There had been growing displeasure in Buckingham Palace at the controversies that persisted to surround the figure.
Soon a late publication by Giuffre will be issued which is expected to draw further attention on his connection with the plaintiff and Epstein.
