Walmart Enforces Buying Restrictions on Pokémon Trading Cards
As a notable development, Walmart has begun implementing strict limits on how many Pokémon trading card items customers can acquire during one shopping trip. This new rule was activated starting November 5th, according to an internal announcement distributed to employees.
Addressing Scalper Activity
While not officially confirmed by Walmart, many believe this decision was influenced by a widely shared social media clip that depicted a customer purchasing a massive amount of Pokémon card products at a checkout counter. The store manager featured in the video faced significant criticism for permitting the bulk transaction to go through.
Rule Specifics and Possible Weaknesses
The new restriction states that shoppers may only buy up to five trading card packs or boxes each time they enter. Yet, the language has sparked debate due to its vagueness. What exactly qualifies as a "box" is not defined, and if someone could buy five premium Elite Trainer Boxes remains ambiguous.
Additionally, since the limit is based on each visit, in theory an eager reseller could make multiple trips—purchasing the maximum each time—to accumulate large quantities over several hours.
The Reseller Crisis
To most players, such efforts might seem excessive, but for scalpers, it's common behavior. Over the past few seasons, speculators have greatly contributed to frequent stockouts of Pokémon cards, spurred by the TCG's growing fame.
Some resellers aim to resell sealed items for a profit, while others search for valuable pulls that can fetch extraordinary prices. As an example, the Mega Lucario ex card in recent releases has been listed for over $800 in online marketplaces.
Looking Ahead
This policy change coincides with the approaching launch of the Phantasmal Flames set, coming on November 14th. Early listings already show premium cards like the Charizard mega evolution being offered for around fifteen hundred dollars, highlighting the persistent interest and potential scalper target.
