What We Know About the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack
At least 16 individuals perished and more than 40 were hurt when assailants shot at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have called a act of terrorism.
In the latest update, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 injured people were admitted to hospital.
The deceased have not yet been formally identified, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.
Here are the victims who have been identified at this time.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She described the events leading up to the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
In a statement, a senior official said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was among those killed in the incident, as per reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with several in a critical state. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.
A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
