Powerful winter gusts caused walls to collapse onto fragile shelters sheltering people uprooted by conflict in Gaza, killing no fewer than four people. This tragedy underscores the dangerous situation that persist after over 24 months of devastating bombardment and critical shortages of aid.

Truce Offers No Relief from Severe Weather

While a truce has been in effect from last fall, aid groups state that residents broadly lack the sufficient shelter required to survive frequent winter storms.

Medical staff at Shifa hospital, which received the victims, said on Tuesday that the deceased were two women, a young female, and a man.

Separately, the Gaza health ministry stated on Tuesday that a 12-month-old infant succumbed of extreme cold during the night.

"International actors has enabled us to witness loss of life in every possible way," stated Bassel Hamouda after the funeral. "While it is correct the bombing may have paused for now, but we have seen all imaginable reasons of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Buried in Shelter Collapse

According to the medical center, 3 people of a one family — elderly Mohamed Hamouda, his teenage granddaughter, and his daughter-in-law — were fatally injured when an 26-foot tall wall collapsed onto their tent in a coastal area of Gaza City. No fewer than five others were hurt in the event.

Their relatives on that day began removing the debris that had buried their family and reconstructing the temporary homes for those who remained.

Humanitarian Efforts and Continuing Emergency

The UN and its humanitarian partners were handing out shelter kits, tarps, warm covers and clothing as well as nutrition and sanitation items across Gaza, stated the relevant UN coordination body.

Most of the population live in makeshift shelters since their homes were turned into rubble during the hostilities. Humanitarian organizations say not enough shelter materials are reaching Gaza under the ceasefire.

These numbers, he explained, reflected incidents where enough details had been compiled to justify recording, but the total toll is expected to be higher. He added that hundreds of children had been injured.

"Although 'explosions and shootings have decreased' under the truce, they have not ceased," the spokesperson told reporters at a UN briefing in the Swiss city by video link from Gaza City. "So what the world now calls quiet would be considered a crisis in any other place," he said.

Another Winter of Struggle

Gaza’s residents of over two million individuals has been struggling to keep the cold weather and bad weather away while facing lack of assistance and a absence of sturdier transitional shelter, which is urgently needed throughout the colder season.
