In a first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” America's largest city, declaring “a different age” and an bold start to his term.

A Historic Leader

The young political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the public whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring counsel to temper hopes, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead with courage and vision.”

Steering by Socialist Principles

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my ideals for fear of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The ceremony was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a agenda including:

• Free childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A rent freeze for about 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these services may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Dynamics

The new mayor also faces concern from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has moved to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly productive.

The Fundamental Challenges of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing basic services: trash collection, curbing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and ensuring smooth transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
